The Missouri Compromise

In the United States in the late 1700s through early 1800s, there had to be a balance of free states and slave states. If one state came as a slave state then the next must come in as a free state. In 1820, Missouri wanted to come in as a slave state, however this would put the balance of free and slave states at risk.  So in order for Missouri to be admitted as a slave state, Maine was admitted as a free state. Named the Missouri Compromise, both sta tes were admitted and the balance was saved.
